Throwing his hands up to protect his face, the goateed man fell to his knees. "Forgive me, master." |

The Dark Man's fingernails dug into his palms until blood flowed, but the pain helped him get himself under control. He reminded himself that he needed the goateed man. At least for now. |

"She is far away, but distance will not save her for long. Come," he said to the bald man, "we must prepare you for the spirit ceremony." |

When Cyrus returned from his morning run Kyna was already up and dressed and waiting at the door with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand. |

"Listen, I got a call from my customer. The meeting has been moved up. Have some breakfast, take a shower and I'll meet you back here in about two hours." |

Kyna sat behind the wheel and waited for the engine to warm up. She felt bad about lying to Cyrusthe meeting had always been scheduled for that morning, but she couldn't let him go with her. The guy she was supposed to meet was so geeky he might just as well have "fence" written in neon letters across his forehead. He really wasn't so badCyrus, not the geek. It was just that she was so down on men. They were all a bunch of macho assholes who believe a woman's life is run by a combination of her biological clock and PMS. Thinking about men started her thinking about Bryan. Kyna threw the Lincoln into gear and floored the accelerator. As the car leapt backward, she caught a glimpse of something big and shaggy in the side mirror and slammed on the brakes. |
